Cover Legend
The finding that a single A to G mutation causes this unique parent-of-origin dependent muscular hypertrophy in sheep is celebrated in an appliqué quilt entitled \"The Gift,\" by Nancy M. Jirtle, a Durham, NC, fiber artist and editor of the online magazine Cyberfibres. The Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite Kallipygos (Kalli- beautiful; -pygos buttocks), is shown giving sheep a mutated callipyge gene which was named for her. Of four possible inheritance patterns, only the animal with an enlarged bottom (made with authentic callipyge wool) inherits the mutated callipyge gene from its father and a normal copy from its mother (CN).
